what to do with the buckets of sand, shells, and river rocks filling my kayak's hold...
I can't come back from kayaking or walking a beach without buckets of sand, shells and waterworn rocks. What to do, what to do...
Fish bowls and glass vases and jars are the first line of defense against clutter. Piling them in a jar with a note about where they come from is nice. With a lid they stay clean and dustfree.
Setting up a fake aquarium is fun, line it with sand and fill it with shells, add action figures, sea life models, mermaids.
Ship's wheels are a staple of many arts and crafts stores in summer (look for them in early summer or spring)(it's retail, by summer they'll be putting out Halloween). Decorate them with your shells and sea life models or plushies. Use glue, or wire or fishing line (!) to attach.
Faerie houses (or supersecret superhero bases for your action figures) can be made from items from the recycling bin (or jars from the craft store).
Stepping stones: there are kits and just plain stepping stone mix available. You can make an indoor stepping stone or wall plaque by using a wooden plaque, ModPodge mud and your shells and rocks.
Just baskets: wicker baskets, painted or not, look great with that stash of stones or shells.

just add ModPodge
ModPodge was created as a decoupage medium, both glue and topcoat. Now it comes in a wide variety of types, but i have jsut used the basic gloss version. Mix it with the sand you brought from the beach (or stuff you got at the hardware store, toy store or craft shop), now you have something bricklayers and stonemasons call "mud". Lay the mud on a surface, press stones, shells or other items into it. It helps if you paint ModPodge on the surface first, but it isn't critical. Use ModPodge as a top coat after the mud dries.
