Dragonfly Island
Eastern Neck National Wildlife Refuge
(Captain's Log: 201209.30)
Eastern Neck National Wildlife Refuge lies at the mouth of the Chester River, where it flows into the Chesapeake Bay, just north of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge. It is salty enough for horseshoe crabs, stingrays and blue crabs. Waterfowl and butterflies use it as a migration route. Eagle and osprey fish its waters. You might have the awesome moment of a decidedly cartiliginous fin of enormous size surfacing next to your kayak paddle (I did, don't worry, it's only a cownosed ray). Fishermen, sailors and paddlers frequent its waters. You can also enjoy it from shore; hike it (short trails lead out to hidden sandy beaches), bike it (hardly any traffic), take the camera, you'll probably have some of the locals pose for you. The first album is photos by Dave Tristan. The second one is mine.
"This 2,285-acre island refuge is a major feeding and resting place for migrating and wintering waterfowl. More than 100,000 ducks, geese and swans seek sanctuary here each year, as do migrating and breeding songbirds and shorebirds, and bald eagles that thrive here year-round.Eastern Neck National Wildlife Refuge provides a variety of recreational opportunities for all ages. Nearly nine miles of trails and roads, including universally-accessible boardwalks and a waterside trail, are open to visitors most of the year, providing excellent wildlife viewing and spectacular Chesapeake Bay vistas. Facilities for boating, fishing, and crabbing are also available. " http://www.fws.gov/northeast/easternneck/
