Schleich and Safari Faeries on Horses
Schleich and Safari do wonderful horses and other animals. Safari tends to be more fine boned and detailed, Schleich tends to heavier boned and Northern European ( they do great heavy or baroque horses and not so great Arabians and other light breeds). The faerie collection in both cases is pretty awesome. Small scale, inexpensive, softish plastic and pretty indestructible. The scales of Safari, Schleich and Papo actually mesh well. They're bigger than Breyer Stablemates (1:32) and smaller than the Classic Breyers (1:12), which creates some challenges for photographing them. Backgrounds will often get blurry if far away. Water is waaay out of scale; setting them on a beach puts them on sand that might look coarse and pebbly, the water looks like globby jello at that scale if you try for waves or moving water. Grass is right out. Moss works pretty well. Try to remove those out of scale leaves from those giant trees...
The biggest problem here remains pale faeries, grey, white or light horses and medium to dark toned everything else. Either the pale washes out or the other shades get too dark. Well, you can always dodge, burn or combine layers in Photoshop. Make sure to shoot a wide variety of exposures.

Shot in and around a big mossy maple tree in my backyard.
