American lotus
Here in the northeast of the US, our largest native wildflower is the American lotus. I first learned of them paddling with Sultana Education Foundation on the Sassafras River in Maryland. They also grow closer to home, on the Susquehanna River, on the Conejehola Flats south of Columbia PA.
Even closer: I grow them from seeds, in my garden ponds. You can grow them in a large pot, either wheeling the pot indoors in winter or setting a small de-icer in the pond during winter. They grow wild, so do survive winter just fine, you just have to keep the water from freezing to the bottom.
Meanwhile, I offer these pics to share in hopes of a brighter future and a better democracy. Kamala is a Sanskrit word meaning lotus. It is used as a feminine given name in Indian culture, predominantly by Hindu families, as it is one of the names of the goddess Lakshmi, who appears from the centre of a lotus. The masculine counterpart Kamal is a given name for Indian boys.
