Art Classes at Blue Hound Farm
Blue Hound Farm...
...sprawls across the hills of south central PA, its rolling fields dotted with grazing horses in bay, grey, chestnut, pinto and Appaloosa. You might catch a glimpse of the "Arabian Retirement Herd" gleefully galloping with tails flagged in the wind. Taste fresh-churned butter from Iberia the Jersey cow, or Princess Fiona, the Alpine goat. Learn why Dutch breeders hundreds of years ago told buyers of Silkies that they were a cross between a chicken and a rabbit (not!). Catch sight of a turtle slipping into the vast pond. See tadpoles in one of the wetlands.
Join us for an artistic excursion into a little piece of Paradise. Learn that watercolor isn't as scary as it looks (our landscapes will inspire you!), sketch cows, horses, goats, pigs, sheep and chickens (and learn something about their anatomy and movement), or go large and paint a mural on one of our barn doors (the horses want to help). Or turn an old window in to a faux "stained glass" work of art for your home. Teanna Byerts (Swordwhale Walking: illustration, scrivenings and photography) will be your guide.
To register (pre-registration required for classes): Email bluehoundfarm@me.com
Provide contact name, phone number, address, class you wish to attend and what experience you have in art (previous art experience not required!). Payment due at the beginning of each class.

Murals!
(Please, Graffiti Our Walls...) Somewhere, there's a big blank white wall just begging to be decorated. It may be in your very own living room (did your realtor paint all the walls one of the 42 colors between hospital white and curdled cream?). Find out how in our roving mural class. Beautify Blue Hound's blank walls and learn how to create murals on your own walls. Don't worry if you flunked art class, this class has something for everyone: you can paint a simple flower or wreath or sunset, or aspire to Michelangelo. We'll show you how to get that idea out of your head, or off your digital file and onto the wall. Materials are provided, but we can't provide a laundry, so wear something expendable, (full foul weather gear for small children may be advisable). If you have some favorite brushes of your own, you can bring them (rollers, sponges, house brushes, artists' brushes). Bring a camera to record your efforts and ultimate masterpiece, you can't take our barn wall with you! Murals too! (Murals prerequisite: must have taken "Murals") Did you have fun painting our walls in the first Murals class? Want to do more, learn more? Come back for seconds in Murals Too! Your art will beautify Blue Hound's blank walls and educate youngsters about the world of farms and nature. (see description of Murals Class for details). For all classes:
Classes are for any skill level: you will get individual attention. (don't worry, no grades!). We will have classes for adults, kids and families. Let us know what most interests you: a girl's night out? A Serious Adults only class? A young kids' class? A family class? We are flexible! The farm will be your reference material: landscapes, pondscapes, gardens, fencelines, pastures, wetlands, woods. Our models are horses, chickens, ducks, pigs, goats and Iberia the Jersey Cow. If it rains, we have a large, sheltered stable area from which we can draw farm animals. If severe weather threatens, we'll move to the indoor studio using small animals, friends and photos as reference. Bring: Your own lunch and beverages (extra water bottles if it's hot). Cameras are a good idea to record reference for future art! You may want a lightweight folding chair or stool, or ground blanket. We will have drawing boards for sketching and watercolors but you may bring your own easel, as well as some of your favorite art supplies if you like. Wear your clodhoppers... It's a farm! (don't step in that...) Wear sturdy shoes such as hiking boots, sneakers, or boots (crocs, frocs, clogs, sandals, flip flops and fashion statements don't work!). Dress for the weather: sunscreen, bug spray and hats are useful. Materials are provided, but not a laundry: We can teach you how to paint, but not how to get alizarin crimson out of your favorite T-shirt! Wear something expendable. (Chicken poop, at least, washes off...). We encourage recycling: pack it in, pack it out! | Before there was digital...
...there was The Sketchbook! How did the classics like Lion King and UP begin? With a pencil and paper and ideas! Sharpen drawing skills, learn new ones and unleash your imagination ( along with a few chickens, ducks, and potbellied pigs). Using models like Iberia the Cow, Zorba the Goat and Silkie Chickens, we'll look at how pro artists create believable anatomy and action. We'll investigate how animals move, and catch them in the pages of our sketchbooks. You can then use these sketches to create your own story in book or storyboard form. Basic materials are provided, but you can bring your favorite paper, pencils, color pencils, crayons, watercolors, or pastels (no oil media please). You can bring that digital camera to catch reference shots for future sketches! Watercolor:
So, you flunked art class, don't worry, this is easier than it looks. Discover the world's simplest color medium, (perfect for fast sketching or travel) or take your existing skills to the next level (watercolor can challenge you for a lifetime). We will provide necessary materials (feel free to bring some of your favorite brushes, papers and paints, if you have them). We'll find something a bit more exciting than potted plants to paint; Blue Hound has gorgeous landscapes, gardens, pastures, pond, wetlands, fencelines and colonial era buildings. Or we may shanghai Iberia the Cow or Princess Fiona (the Goat) into posing. You can bring a camera to capture shots for future artworks. You'll learn about materials, color theory, brush techniques, but not how to get alizarin crimson out of your best white shirt, so wear something expendable. |
